Home &Lifestyle | PAGE 9 Owner and operator of Solahart East Gippsland, Rob Rawlings, has set up a booming trade in the area, offering a personal service to his customers. Rob recently found himself in need of a reliable truck which would cater to his expanding business needs, after noticing other companies opting for smaller trucks for their solar equipment and saw it as an advantage for his own business. Rob ended up choosing the Hino Hybrid Electric, which fitted perfectly with his business of replacing older technology with environmentally-friendly products. There are many advantages to going solar, many of which should be considered when undertaking a home renovation. 1. Increase the energy efficiency of your home Going solar is an investment that can help reduce your energy consumption by harnessing the sun's free energy to deliver power for your home, instead of relying only on the grid. This means that by considering a clean and green source of energy in your renovation plans, it could actually help you keep more money in your pocket over time, and protect you from increasing grid-energy costs. According to research, cutting down power bills is a key priority for customers who choose solar power (71 per cent). With the installation of a 6kW solar power system, a typical family could save approximately $1500 on their annual energy bills. Also, the same family could reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by up to seven tonnes per year. 2. Reduce the energy you use to heat water Installing a solar hot water heater can help you make a big difference to your energy consumption. This will ensure you are taking advantage of the abundant Australian sunshine to produce the hot water required for your home. A conventional water heater typically makes up about 25 per cent of a household's energy use in Australia. You could save up to 65 per cent of your hot water energy use if you replace your current gas or electric water heater with a solar water heater. 2017-18 saw 23 per cent growth in solar generation, indicating there is a significant shift towards increased energy productivity. 3. Increase the value of your home According to research from realestate.com.au, installing solar products has the potential to increase a home's value; and other than improving our lifestyle, adding value to our real estate, is a nice side effect to have when embarking on a renovation project. In fact, the survey positioned solar technology as top-of-mind when it came to green living. Some of the findings were: - 85 per cent of Australians say that solar panels would add value to a home. - 78 per cent of Australians say that solar hot water would increase a home's value. - Two in five renters would pay up to $10 extra per week for a home with solar. - Solar technology helps homeowners realise that certain aspects of their home, such as the roof, can be a great asset, especially when living in a country where sunshine is abundant. 4. Go green and help save the planet Did you know 60 per cent of the electricity consumed by the average Aussie household is generated from coal? But there is a smarter way to power your home. Like using energy free from the sun. Solar helps you make a significant contribution to the environment, as it uses a natural power source to deliver energy and hot water for your home. As a result, you are also doing your bit to reduce greenhouse emissions. For example, a Solahart solar water heater can help you save up to 1.6 to 2.7 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. So, your next renovation is a great opportunity to make a difference. For more information, reach out to the local experts at Solahart East Gippsland. Make solar part of your next renovation

PAGE 12 | Home&Lifestyle Wallpaper is an easy way to create a feature wall or transform a whole space - here’s how to it. Here’s what you’ll need: - Clean bucket of water - Ladder - Paint brush - Paint roller tray - Pencil - Roller tray - Spirit level - Stirrer - Tape measure - Utility knife - Wallpaper smoother - Wallpaper - Wallpaper paste STEPS 1. Measure your first drop - Before you start, read the instructions that come with the wallpaper. Once you’ve done this, measure the width of your wallpaper and deduct about five centimetres. Use the tape measure to mark this distance out from the corner of the wall. From this mark, use the spirit level and pencil to run a straight line from the top of the wall to the bottom. 2. Mix the wallpaper paste - Read the instructions on the wallpaper paste packet. In a bucket, add the required amount of paste to the necessary amount of water. Use the stirrer to mix this until the paste has a thick consistency, then pour the paste into the paint roller tray. 3. Apply the paste - Working from the corner, use the paint brush Transform your walls to apply the wallpaper paste to the wall where you’re going to hang your first drop of wallpaper. Use a brush to apply the paste in the corners and along the edges, then use the roller to apply the paste to the rest of the wall. Overlap when applying the paste and roll and brush it beyond the pencil line you drew with the spirit level. 4. Hang the first drop - Get up on the ladder and line the end of the wallpaper roll up with the top of the wall. Also line the edge of the wallpaper with the straight line that runs down the wall. Run your hand over it so it sticks to the wall. Step off the ladder and unroll the wallpaper until the roll is sitting on the floor, and cut the wallpaper from the roll, below the wall. 5. Smooth and trim - Use the wallpaper smoother to smooth out all of the bubbles and creases, working from the top to the bottom. Once the wallpaper is smooth, use the utility knife and straight edge of the smoother to trim the wallpaper in the corner and at the bottom of the wall. 6. Hang the second sheet - Apply paste to the wall where your second sheet of wallpaper will hang, using the paint brush and roller. Apply the paste evenly and wider than the width of your wallpaper. Then follow the same process in steps four and five. 7. Hang the rest of the wallpaper - After hanging the first two sheets of wallpaper, continue applying paste to the wall and hanging the sheets of wallpaper until you have covered the whole wall. 8. Trim - If you covered a hole or powerpoint with wallpaper, you need to cut the wallpaper so it can be installed. Before you start, make sure the electricity in the house is off. Feel where the hole for the powerpoint is, then use the utility knife to cut from corner to corner of the hole, leaving an X shaped cut in the wallpaper. Have the powerpoint installed by a licensed electrician. $ # $"%& & & & $ & %% & $ # $"% & $"%& & & & $ ! & & $"% "% ! % # ! $ #$"%# "% $ # $"% ! $ %"%##&#!" ! #& ! & ! & & ! %

The team at A.S Interior Collective can work on new builds, renovations, commercial sectors or designing for special needs - any aspect of the design process, they can co-create. They begin with an initial site visit, walking around the space to discuss what are your needs, desires and expectations. About to build for the first time and not sure where to start? Home &Lifestyle | PAGE 19 Top Australian interior trends of 2024 Australia's unique blend of laid-back lifestyle and love for nature is strongly reflected in its interior design trends. 2024 is no exception, with a focus on sustainability, comfort and a connection to the outdoors. Let's dive into the hottest trends shaping Australian homes this year. NATURE'S EMBRACE Australians have always had a deep appreciation for the natural world. In 2024, this connection is being brought indoors more than ever. Biophilic Design: Incorporating natural elements like plants, wood and stone to create a sense of well-being and connection to nature. Earthy Tones: Warm, neutral palettes inspired by the Australian landscape are dominating colour schemes. Think sandy beiges, olive greens, and terracotta. Natural Materials: Sustainable and tactile materials such as linen, rattan, and clay are making a strong comeback. A TOUCH OF RETRO Nostalgia is making a comeback, with a modern twist. 70s Revival: Bold patterns, earthy tones, and natural materials are reminiscent of the 70s, but with a contemporary edge. Mid-Century Modern: Sleek lines, organic shapes, and a focus on functionality are still relevant in 2024. Vintage Accents: Incorporating antique or pre-loved pieces adds character and personality to a space. BOLD AND COLOURFUL While neutral tones are popular, there's also a growing trend towards bolder and more vibrant colour palettes. Accent Walls: Adding a pop of colour to a single wall can create a dramatic focal point. Mixed Patterns: Combining different patterns and textures can add visual interest and personality to a space. Metallic Accents: Gold, copper, and brass are being used to add a touch of luxury and glamour. By incorporating these trends into your home, you can create a stylish, comfortable, and sustainable space that reflects the Australian lifestyle. A popular interior design trend being seen in Australia this year is the accent wall, which can add a dramatic focal point to a space.

Crunden-Smith Furniture is a locally operated business specialising in custom made hardwood furniture. Sustainability is a key aspect to CrundenSmith’s business model. That is why they primarily use recycled hardwoods, salvaged locally from residential and commercial sites and locally sourced native timber. This reduces landfill, waste and the use of chemically treated timbers and materials. Australia grows some of the most beautiful timber in the world. Each item is completely made to order, allowing the customer to choose the timber they want and configure the piece to exactly match their requirements. A dining table to suit a particular space, a sideboard with plenty of storage or a coffee table in a particular timber. All is possible with custom made furniture.
